About Svaroopa® Yoga

Svaroopa Yoga comes from a paradigm that is unconventional compared to other yoga styles or exercise classes. Poses are held for an extended time, and students are propped to meet the tension in their bodies, allowing muscles to soften and consequently, release - rather than straining to stretch them.

Specifically, the poses target deep muscles connected to the spine. We teach them sequentially - from the tailbone, through the sacrum, and on up to the top of the spine. Classes begin and end with guided relaxation.  We include yogic breathing as well.

Lesson themes are:

Daily Practice
Lower Spinal Release
Upper Spinal Release
Abdominals
Backbends
Standing Poses
Forward Bends
Neck & Shoulders
Balance & Inversions
Classical Poses
Vinyasa
Seated Poses & Twists

Svaroopa is about the inner openings, not the way the poses look from the outside. The results are relief from aches and pains and a calmer state of mind.

Rama Berch, CSYT, RYT, the founder and heart of Svaroopa Yoga, has been living and teaching yoga for over 30 years. She trained in five styles of hatha yoga as well as pranayama and meditation. Rama brings to her teaching an encyclopedic grasp of the principles of yoga, in which she was deeply grounded during many years of study in India. She has an exceptional understanding of the spine as a conduit of consciousness and the knowledge of how the body and mind work, and how they work together.
